In this photo from The New York Observer, Former Philadelphia police Captain Ray Lewis, sits in zip cuffs after being arrested today in conjunction with the Occupy Wall Street protests.

Drew Grant of The Observer writes: “There is simply nothing more bizarre than looking at images of a man in police uniform arrested and handcuffed by people wearing lower-ranking NYPD garb.”

Lewis’ arrest was caputured on video:

Lewis knew his arrest was a possibility. In a rousing speech last night, Lewis criticized the NYPD and its use of force, along with New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg. An excerpt:

“You should, by law, only use force to protect someone’s life or to protect them from being bodily injured. If you’re not protecting somebody’s life or protecting them from bodily injury, there’s no need to use force. And the number one thing that they always have in their favor that they seldom use is negotiation – continue to talk, and talk and talk to people. You have nothing to lose by that. This bullrush–what happened last night is totally uncalled for when they did not use negotiation long enough.

“They complained about the park being dirty. Here they are worrying about dirty parks when people are starving to death, where people are freezing, where people are sleeping in subways and they’re concerned about a dirty park. That’s obnoxious, it’s arrogant, it’s ignorant, it’s disgusting.

[The NYPD], they’re trying to get me arrested and I may disappear OK? But as soon as I’m let out of jail, I’ll be right back here and they’ll have to arrest me again. All the cops are, they’re just workers for the one percent and they don’t even realize they’re being exploited.”

Emotionally intense images of retired Philadelphia police captain Ray Lewis - who has joined the #OccupyWallStreet protests - being arrested by the NYPD.

Captain Lewis has been outspoken against the NYPD’s wrongful use of violence against peaceful protesters.

From what I have seen, Ray Lewis’ conduct defines honor, bravery, and dignity.

There is a media blackout on images of his participation in the protest, and on his arrest:

crosscrowdedrooms:

It’s proved impossible for me to get this shot of former Philadelphia Police Cpt. Ray Lewis being arrested, published anywhere.  I was adamantly rebuffed by the Philadelphia Inquirer, NYT, local NY papers, and Newsweek, before even looking at the photograph.  One of the only published photos of this paradoxical and intense event is located here at the NYC Observer:

Make this viral and they will come.

Ray Lewis gets 2 posts this morning, because this needs to be seen. I’m not even sure why, but this pair of photos made me cry hysterically.

oh my god. so much props to this man. this country has turned into utter fucking i******y.

Wow. Just wow.

i mean

is this a cop protesting cop culture and behavior?

I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever seen this ever.

Holy shit.

84-year-old Occupy Seattle participant Dorli Rainey, pictured above after being pepper sprayed by Seattle Police on November 15th.
She later wrote about the incident:
“Something funny happened on my way to a transportation meeting in Northgate. As I got off the bus at 3rd and Pine I heard helicopters above. Knowing that the problems of New York would certainly precipitate action by Occupy Seattle, I thought I better check it out. Especially since only yesterday the City Government made a grandiose gesture to protect free speech. Well free speech does have its limits as I found out as the cops shoved their bicycles into the crowd and simultaneously pepper sprayed the so captured protesters. If it had not been for my Hero (Iraq Vet Caleb) I would have been down on the ground and trampled. This is what democracy looks like. It certainly left an impression on the people who rode the No. 1 bus home with me. In the women’s movement there were signs which said: “Screw us and we multiply.’”

This bothers me a lot, and I don’t even know what to do about it, save for spreading the word.

This makes my blood boil.
When are the cops going to realize that they are not part of the 1%?
When are they going to realize that it’s not about them, but if they continue to act like this it will be about them.
That the people that are protesting peacefully had a right to do so.
That their actions are unlawful and violating the freedom of speech.

The Hell?

Permaculture at Occupy Wall Street.

This is so wonderful. It excites me so much I don’t have the words to adequately describe it.

anglophonic:

Protip for all of you good people who are fighting for the cause:

Do not engage the assholes who are posting anti-OWS signs.  They are idiots and liars…and in some cases they are being paid to make those statements by political action groups.

They want to upset you, and they want you to waste your energy.  If they were really making that much money they would not have time to post handwritten notes on FB…nor would their employers approve of their behavior.

Ignore them, know that you are doing the right thing, and do not get sucked into their trolling.

Occupy Wall Street becomes a world protest.

Starting from the top: protesters at a rally in Seoul, South Korea; masked protesters in Zurich, Switzerland; Hong Kong’s Exchange Square; the NYSE Euronext stock exchange protest in Amsterdam, where Pinocchio noses and fake euros are among the props; WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange outside the London Stock Exchange; thousands of protesters in Berlin.
