Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes
For 75 years, Finland’s expectant mothers have been given a box by the state. It’s like a starter kit of clothes, sheets and toys that can even be used as a bed. And some say it helped Finland achieve one of the world’s lowest infant mortality rates.
It’s a tradition that dates back to the 1930s and it’s designed to give all children in Finland, no matter what background they’re from, an equal start in life.
The maternity package - a gift from the government - is available to all expectant mothers.
It contains bodysuits, a sleeping bag, outdoor gear, bathing products for the baby, as well as nappies, bedding and a small mattress.
With the mattress in the bottom, the box becomes a baby’s first bed. Many children, from all social backgrounds, have their first naps within the safety of the box’s four cardboard walls.
Mothers have a choice between taking the box, or a cash grant, currently set at 140 euros, but 95% opt for the box as it’s worth much more.
The tradition dates back to 1938. To begin with, the scheme was only available to families on low incomes, but that changed in 1949.

“My mother fought cancer for almost a decade and died at 56. She held out long enough to meet the first of her grandchildren and to hold them in her arms. But my other children will never have the chance to know her and experience how loving and gracious she was. I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy.
Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of” - My Medical Choice by Angelina Jolie, New York Times (14 May, 2013)

As someone who has had to take the morning after pill and had my own share of pregnancy scares, it shits me to no end that an actually life-changing event like accidental pregnancy and it’s effects (cost of abortion or cost of taking care of a child) can be taken so lightly by men who think it’s hilarious that this woman may actually fall pregnant due to their irresponsibility and unprofessional behaviour.
Oh holy shit that is terrifying and most definitely illegal
The name of the guy giving women fake morning after pills is Peter Hanna, and he lives in Sydney, Australia
He works at Shop Smart Wholesale Pharmacy in Mount Druitt, Sydney, Australia.
For those asking, you could contact the local police there, the store itself, or complete this form: http://www.hccc.nsw.gov.au/Complaints/Online-Complaint-Form
Please please please report this guy
He is forcing people to become pregnant against their will, which can be extremely dangerous
And at the very least, is is giving people a medicine that they could be allergic to or that could have bad side effects when combined with their other medications, and they don’t know that they’re taking it
He is really putting people’s lives at risk here.

Traditional FA [Fat Acceptance] arguments have relied on the idea that the way to diffuse these hateful statements is to prove that fat isn’t necessarily unhealthy. But by doing so we’ve ceded the premise that health status is, in fact, grounds for hating or despising someone. And as long as the tiniest statistical correlation between fatness and whatever-disease exists, we’ve lost the argument, because we diffused the wrong bomb: we should have rejected the idea that it’s okay to hate people for being ‘unhealthy,’ period.

Yes, this is SUCH an important point. Fitspo tends to be ableist. It also tends to push a ideology — and it is an ideology — that the height of human achievement/perfection is a ‘fit’ body. Now, if some people want to pursue that, fine. But many of its members can’t seem to understand that theirs is a belief system not based on objective truths. There is no moral difference between someone who runs marathons, and a person who runs marathon coding sessions. Or someone who does neither. None.

This was why I had to stop using myfitnesspal—it was fucking me up mentally and I was on the fast track to EDNOS because the whole idea on that site (and other fitness sites) is that if you’re exercising and calorie-counting and not losing weight, it’s not because there’s something wrong with your body—it’s that you’re lying to yourself and not trying hard enough because you “don’t want it enough.”
I have hypothyroidism because I’m living with half a thyroid, and that half barely functions. Even when it’s being treated properly, I gain weight very easily. After years of struggling and beating myself up over not being able to lose weight, a doctor finally told me that the 20+ lbs. I gained when I was 21 was metabolic weight gain (brought on by steroids, which I had to take to treat a pretty severe bout of bronchitis) and would therefore be very difficult to lose for a totally healthy person, let alone someone with a disease that affects the metabolism.
Fuck ableism. Fuck fitspo.
It is ableist at heart in that it is based on the assumption of able bodiedness, as well as a lot of other privileges. It also trades in and lends itself to things like eugenics and other improvement of the (human) race type notions.
Yet it’s fair to say some PWD are more inclined and able to exercise than many able bodied people.
